Surf Rescue Certificate

Pre-requisites
A candidate must be at least 13 years old on the date of the examination, and must have completed a 200 metre swim in 5 minutes or less before any training starts in the surf and/or deep water.

Learning outcomes
The candidate should be able to:
• Describe beach sense practices
• Describe surfing and environmental condition and hazards
• Identify basic patient management techniques
• Perform basic resuscitation techniques
• Perform CPR resuscitation techniques (candidates 15 years and over)
• Perform surf skills
• Perform SLSA signals
• Identify people in distress in a surfing and aquatic environment
• Perform patient approaches, support and escapes aided by equipment on a conscious and an unconscious patient
• Describe the purpose of patrols and patrolling
• Demonstrate a knowledge of patrols

Assessment
The candidate must satisfy a majority of the Examiners that they are competent in all learning outcomes by written or oral examination, performance of basic skills, and simulation of rescue scenarios.
For this award to remain current, candidates must perform an annual proficiency check.

Bronze Medallion

Pre-requisites
A candidate must be at least 15 years old on the day of the examination, and must have completed a 400 metre swim in nine minutes or less before any training starts in the surf and/or in deep water.

Learning outcomes
A candidate should be able to:
• Describe beach sense practices
• Describe surfing and environmental conditions and hazards
• Recognise an appropriate safe beach and zone for surf bathing in key locations
• Identify basic patient management techniques
• Perform basic patient management techniques
• Perform basic resuscitation techniques
• Perform CPR resuscitation techniques
• Perform radio communication practices using approved SLSA radios
• Perform surf skills
• Perform SLSA signals
• Identify people in distress in a surfing or water environment
• Perform patient approaches, support and escapes aided by equipment on a conscious and an unconscious patient
• Crew an inflatable rescue boat (IRB)
• Perform patient retrieval and support unaided by equipment
• Describe the purpose of patrols and patrolling
• Show a knowledge of patrols
• Identify and demonstrate all the factors which affect bathers and those using the water for recreation

Assessment
The candidate must satisfy the majority of the Examiners that they are competent in all learning outcomes by written or oral examination, performance of basic skills, and simulation of rescue scenarios.
For this award to remain current, candidates must perform an annual proficiency check.

Advanced Resuscitation Certificate

Pre-requisites
A candidate must be at least 15 years old on the date of the examination.

Learning outcomes
A candidate must be able to:
• Perform basic resuscitation techniques
• Perform CPR resuscitation techniques
• Demonstrate oxygen aided resuscitation
• Demonstrate a knowledge of the components of airbag resuscitator units and undertake practical assessments of the units
• Demonstrate the use of an airbag in a simulated scenario
• Demonstrate a theoretical and practical knowledge of Stifneck collars and their use

Assessment
The candidate must satisfy the majority of the Examiners that they are competent in all learning outcomes by written or oral examination, performance of basic skills, and simulation of rescue scenarios.
For this award to remain current, candidates must perform an annual proficiency check.

IRB Crewman's Certificate

Pre-requisites
A candidate must be at least 16 years old on the date of the examination, and hold a current SLSA Surf Rescue Certificate.

Learning outcomes
A candidate must be able to competently crew an inflatable rescue boat (IRB), including being able to:
• demonstrate pre-launch procedures
• perform crewing procedures
• perform a rescue in an IRB as a crew member
• use and act on recognised SLSA signals
• demonstrate assessment of patients and appropriate responses to the condition of patients
• demonstrate emergency crew responses when required
• demonstrate post-patrol procedures as a crew member.

Assessment
The candidate must satisfy the majority of the Examiners that they are competent in all learning outcomes by written or oral examination, performance of basic skills, and simulation of rescue scenarios.
For this award to remain current, candidates must perform an annual proficiency check.

Silver Medallion (IRB Driver)

Pre-requisites
A candidate must be at least 17 years old on the date of the examination, hold a current Bronze Medallion, and hold a current state boat licence where applicable - in NSW this means the MSB boat licence.

Learning outcomes
A candidate must be able to competently drive an inflatable rescue boat (IRB), including being able to:
• demonstrate pre-launch procedures
• perform driving procedures
• perform a rescue in an IRB as a driver
• demonstrate emergency driver responses when required
• demonstrate post-patrol procedures as a driver.

Assessment
The candidate must satisfy the majority of the Examiners that they are competent in all learning outcomes by written or oral examination, performance of basic skills, and simulation of rescue scenarios.
For this award to remain current, candidates must perform an annual proficiency check.

Silver Medallion (Patrol Captain)

This is not a compulsory award for a member to be appointed as a Patrol Captain. The accreditation is valid for three years.

Pre-requisites
A candidate must be at least 18 years old on the date of accreditation, have held a Bronze Medallion, and hold a current SLSA award, such as the Bronze Medallion, the Radio Operator's Certificate or the Advanced Resuscitation Certificate.

Learning outcomes
A candidate must be able to:
• manage people and their training in patrol and beach management
• manage and coordinate resources
• implement regulations
• manage the flow of information
• choose and plan strategies to manage emergencies.

Assessment
The candidate must satisfy the accredited course presenter that they are competent in all learning outcomes by written or oral examination, group presentation and simulation of rescue scenarios.

Silver Medallion (Life Support)

This award is valid for three years from the date of examination.

Pre-requisites
A candidate must be at least 16 years old on the date of examination.

Learning outcomes
A candidate must be able to:
• identify basic patient management techniques
• perform basic patient management techniques
• demonstrate an ability to identify and manage a patient's condition
• maintain adequate first aid equipment and facilities
• perform basic resuscitation techniques
• perform CPR resuscitation techniques
• demonstrate oxygen aided resuscitation
• demonstrate a knowledge of the components of airbag resuscitator units and practical assessments
• demonstrate use of an airbag in a simulated scenario
• demonstrate a theoretical and practical knowledge of Stifneck collars and their use
• choose and plan strategies to manage emergencies.

Assessment
The candidate must satisfy the majority of the Examiners that they are competent in all learning outcomes by written or oral examination, performance of basic skills and simulation of rescue scenarios.
